Food Awareness Films – (Part 2 of a 4 Part Series)

Food INC by filmmaker Robert Kenner asks the question: How much do we really know about the food we buy at our local supermarkets and serve to our families? This film exposes the “highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA.” (Food INC Official Website)

What many people don’t realize is that most of our nation’s food supply is controlled by corporations that do not have concern over what happens to those that consume the very food they produce. “We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chops, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad; but we also have new strains of E. coli – the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Food, INC. features an interview with Eric Schlosser of Fast Food Nation. Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal was released in 2001 as a book and was later turned into a film of the same name. Fast Food Nation examines the local and global influence of the fast food industry. 

Food, INC reveals surprising and shocking truths about what we eat, how it is produced, and how as a nation (and universally) where we are going to go from this point.


Super Size Me was another breakthrough film that attempted to open the eyes of the consumer. Morgan Spurlock filmed this documentary that showed a 30 day time period where he ate only McDonald’s food. The film documented the lifestyle’s drastic effects on his physical and mental well being and explores the fast food industry’s corporate influence as well as how it encourages poor nutrition for it’s own profit. Spurlock had dined at McDonald’s restaurants three times per day and sampled every item on the chain’s menu (in 2003). Another rule was that he had to super size his meal if given the option. In the 30 day period of time Spurlock gained 24 1/2 pounds and his cholesterol level rose to 230. It took Spurlock 14 months to lose every pound that he had gained during this experiment.

I personally am not much of a ‘fad’ person and had never been a fan of the famous golden arches before this movie; but watching this movie completely opened my eyes. I have never and will never eat there nor will my children. I can promise you that no matter how ‘healthy’ they try to be I will never fall for their gimmicks. 

The truth is that many people see these movies and care about what they are witnessing. It’s a big deal to watch a documentary about foods that we put in our bodies and our families bodies. If given the choice over whether we should be healthy or whether we should be able to ingest foods that are bad for us; why would we choose to harm ourselves? 

I only hope that as we near the end of this decade that we are able to open our eyes to the pollutants that we surround ourselves with, make informed choices. and start taking control of our bodies.
